Earlier today I was just listening to Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient works. The dark and beautiful sonic-scape shimmering while I work on my WebDev project. So much to my surprise when turning on Bottler, much like Aphex Twin, heard a similar kind of dark and beautiful soundscape on their Clementine EP, shimmering with a 90s IDM and trance vibe. Influence from Autechre to Juno Reactor.
Nobody Likes Me, the opening track, begins with sustained piano chords builds into a dissonant drone creates tension which is then let off by the sound of Casio keyboard intervals, much in the vein of Radiohead’s Everything’s in it’s right place, coming in. The track then opens up into an interesting IDM styled instrumental, laced with an audio snippit “Nobody Likes Me” from a kids record, I guess. (“Nobody likes me, everybody hates me guess i’ll go eat worms”)
When I Don’t Think Of You is where we first hear the vox. Upon first listen, it reminded me early Dirty Projectors or The Shins. But after listening a few more times it’s seems more along the lines of 80s Sade with a bit of a vaporwave tinge. The next track, Day Sleeper Peace Keeper, is much more like Nobody Likes Me, and dives into a much more ambient kinda vibe. This is probably my favorite track. It’s droney and trancy but still has some cool IDM elements. It’s not burdened by vocals. Which gets me to the last track…
Weekend… It just doesn’t fit the overall aesthetic of the album. Where “When I Don’t Think of You” also has vocals, the vocals are more subdued and had a more chill, r&b kind of feel. Where as Weekend is much more in your face and is far more hooky. The track has a good sound. It might work on a longer album, but it calls too much attention to itself and detracts from the overall 4 track EP.
Overall, Bottler Clementine a good EP. And a great start to project. Think Body Language meets some older IDM classics.
